Chris Stainforth - Chief Executive Officer

Chris Stainforth is CEO of Counterpoint Asset Management. He graduated from the University of Pietermaritzburg in 1993, and has spent the past 18 years in the financial services industry, holding senior roles at various institutions including Investec, Fleming Martin Asset Management, and Stanlib. Following that, Chris established ventures for large institutions on a partnership basis, including a research-based advice tool for Sanlam Investment Management, and more recently a private equity venture for the Liberty Group. He then established Counterpoint Asset Management alongside Dr. Alex Pestana and Steve Mills in 2012.

Chris is also keen sportsman and enjoys triathlons, water-skiing and spending time in the bush with his family.

  Sam Houlie – Chief Investment Officer

Sam Houlie is a qualified Chartered Accountant and CFA Charter Holder. He graduated from the University of Cape Town in 1990, and completed his articles at Ernst & Young before beginning his investment career with the Allan Gray Investment Counsel (AGIC) in 1997. In 2001, he moved to Abvest Associates (now called Absa Asset Management) and was instrumental in establishing their equity business, building a solid investment process and domestic equity track record. After a period as Chief Investment Officer, he was appointed as the CEO of Abvest in 2004. Sam then joined Investec Asset Management In 2006 as a Director, and fulfilled the dual roles of Head of South African Equities and Global Equity Portfolio Manager. In 2012, Sam started his own globally focused investment firm, later folded into Momentum Asset Management, where he headed their Momentum Contrarian business unit based in Cape Town. The arrangement with Momentum concluded at the end of 2015, after which Sam joined Counterpoint in 2016 as Chief Investment Officer.

Besides his passion for investing, Sam is an enthusiastic triathlete. He spends most of his free time with his family, and has two teenage children. When he can, he also enjoys reading biographies, playing the guitar and travelling.

  Dr Alex Pestana – Portfolio Manager
BSc.(Hons), B Soc.Sci., M Phil. & Ph.D.

After completing his Ph.D. at the University of Cape Town in 1985, Alex did his postdoctoral studies in Paris with Nobel-prize winner Sir Derek Barton. Alex started his investment career at Capital Alliance Asset Management as a quantitative analyst and economist, before joining Fleming Martin Asset Management in 1997 as head of Fixed Interest, where he took the bond fund to first place in the bond fund unit trust category. Then in 1999, Alex joined Sanlam Investment Management’s fixed interest team, and after three years joined the SIM strategy team. He received the coveted SIM CEO award for his contribution to the Sanlam group in 2002. He was appointed Chief Investment Strategist in 2004, a position he held until 2007 when he joined Steve Mills in the Absolute Return Boutique, where they jointly managed a range of multi-asset class funds. Alex is the Portfolio Manager at Counterpoint Asset Management, responsible for fixed interest funds.

In his spare time, Alex loves to swim and play squash. He enjoys languages (speaking five), and drinking wine. He re-started playing the piano two years ago and has a goal of playing a few Bach pieces in counterpoint!

  Raymond Shapiro - Head of Equities
B.Bus.Sc (Finance), PGDA, CA(SA), CFA®

Raymond Shapiro graduated from the University of Cape Town in 2004. He started his career at The Standard Bank Group, completing his articles under their TOPP programme, and specialising in financial management. During this time he gained exposure to various areas of the bank including treasury, tax, African operations, and asset management. Raymond then joined Melville Douglas Investment Management in 2007 as an equity analyst, later also becoming a portfolio manager. There he gained experience in both domestic and global portfolio management, specialising in local and international stock selection and research. He was instrumental in building the firm’s global direct equities capability, including its global equity fund. Raymond joined Counterpoint in 2014 and is the Head of Equities.

Raymond enjoys various outdoor activities and is a keen traveller with a strong interest in the cultures and economies of different countries. He also has a penchant for the sweet science of boxing.

  Samiegha Hendrickse - Investment Specialist
B.Com (Economics) & Hons (FAPM)

Samiegha Hendrickse graduated from the University of Cape Town with a B.Com Honours degree in Economics in 2006. She has 11 years’ experience in the asset management industry, beginning at Willis Towers Watson in 2005 (known as Fifth Quadrant Actuaries and Consultants at the time), moving to Prudential Investment Managers in 2008, and then to Momentum Asset Management in 2012. She joined Counterpoint Asset Management in April 2017, and her role enables the investment professionals to focus exclusively on financial markets and investment decision making. Samiegha’s strengths include both qualitative and quantitative input to support the investment team and business development. Her in-depth experience in the asset management industry and asset consulting environment make her a valuable part of the team.

Outside of work, Samiegha enjoys spending time with her children, family and friends, and hopes one day to travel the world.

  Elaine Steyn - Accounting and MIS
B.Acc. & B.Compt. (Hons)

Elaine Steyn completed her B.Accounting Degree at Stellenbosch University and did her articles at Price Waterhouse Coopers. She spent a year working in London after completing her articles, and has nine years of accounting experience across various industries. Elaine is responsible for the Accounting and MIS at Counterpoint.

Elaine enjoys pilates, relaxing with friends and a good glass of wine, and spending time with her husband and three daughters.

  Gaye Wyngaard – Investment Operations Manager

Gaye Wyngaard started her career in investment administration at Protea Assurance 25 years ago. She deepened her experience at industry stalwarts Investec Asset Management (1994 to 1996) and Coronation Asset Management (1997 to 2000). She was part of the management team at TASC / JP Morgan SA Investor Services, the administration subsidiary of Sanlam (currently Curro) during 2000 to 2004. Gaye then moved to Sanlam Investment Management, where she worked from 2005 to 2007. Her most recent role before Counterpoint was heading up the Client Administration Team for Skybound Capital, a Cape Town-based boutique Hedge Fund manager, where she worked from 2008 to 2016. Gaye joined Counterpoint in early 2017 as assistant to the portfolio management team and to manage the investment administration process.

å Gaye enjoys walking in the mountains with her husband and dogs, running, and sailing in False Bay. She also takes time for personal development, and has completed a variety of short courses including ones on acting for film, wine, Xhosa and tourism.

  Paul Trilivas - Investment Analyst
BComm. (Finance), CFA

Paul holds a B.Com in finance and is a CFA charterholder. He Started his career at The Standard Bank Group, working in the Specialized Credit department. He then moved into an Equity Analyst role at ValueKwik, a sell-side free cash flow focused equity research boutique. After eight years at ValueKwik he moved into buy-side as an Investment Analyst at Integrity Asset Management. Working closely with the Portfolio Manager he gained further modelling and valuation skills, specialising in local and international stock valuation and selection. He built on, and implemented a robust research structure within the company. Paul joined Counterpoint in February 2018 as an Investment Analyst.

Paul enjoys outdoor activities such as hiking and bodyboarding. He also enjoys staying fit through gym, boxing, and a bit of martial arts.
